CONTEXT

Finding the motivation to work out is challenging, as is deciding which workouts best suit each individual. As a regular user of fitness apps in my weekly routine, I began to envision a more intuitive app—one that feels less overwhelming and provides quick, easy access to the features I use most. To explore this idea, I gathered participants who shared similar experiences.

Motiv. Wellness & Fitness is designed with equity at its core. Everyone, including those who struggle with motivation and decision-making, deserves to feel just as accomplished as those who don’t face these challenges. Many fitness apps on the market today are oversaturated with features, often hidden behind paywalls, overwhelming users with options they may never use. I focused on making this app’s interface intuitive and customizable, allowing users to tailor their fitness and wellness experience to their individual goals.

fitness apps should be effortlessly accessible.

This problem is important to me because everyone deserves to start their wellness journey hassle-free and rewarding.

Motiv.’s main appeal lies in its simple connectivity that allows users to access commonly used functions.

prototype 2

Users of Motiv. Wellness & Fitness needs the app to provide generous positive reinforcement and easily accessible statistics to help them progress toward their wellness and fitness goals. During interviews, participants shared that their current workout apps lack features that effectively boost motivation.

FINAL SOLUTION

Based on participant feedback, I recognized the need to adjust my design by adding a more prominent reminder screen and incorporating a calendar to enhance the functionality of the workout segmentation. Participants also suggested making the app more robust, so I introduced music/playlist options and a timer on each routine page. These additions addressed the concern that the app felt too minimal.

INSIGHTS

I discovered that users prefer fitness apps that offer more customization, allowing them to hide features they don’t use and prioritize the ones they rely on most. However, during the process, I lost sight of the project's original scope and mistakenly focused on making the app "simplistic" rather than user-friendly. This caused my second prototype to become too minimalistic, lacking both clarity and direction. Moving forward, I will focus on meeting user needs while crafting a joyful and engaging user experience.
